Switch Axe vs. Charge Blade: Which to Choose in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Ah yes, the age-old question. No matter which *Monster Hunter* game you're diving into, the debate between the Switch Axe and Charge Blade is ever-present. If you're torn between these two powerful weapons in *Monster Hunter Wilds*, here's a comprehensive guide to help you make your choice.

Is the Switch Axe or Charge Blade Better in Monster Hunter Wilds?

It's impossible to crown one weapon definitively superior to the other in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. Both are robust choices, yet despite their similarities, they cater to distinctly different play styles.

To cut to the chase, if you crave more defensive capabilities, opt for the Charge Blade. It comes equipped with a shield, enabling you to defend and absorb oncoming hits.

Conversely, if you're after a more fluid attack pattern, the Switch Axe is your go-to. While it lacks a shield for defense, it compensates with little hops that help you evade attacks. Additionally, switching between the Axe and Sword modes is smoother with the Switch Axe, allowing for more seamless combo chaining compared to the Charge Blade.

Why Charge Blade?

The Charge Blade in *Monster Hunter Wilds* offers enhanced defensive options. Playing in sword and board mode can make things quite manageable.

The essence of using a Charge Blade lies in charging your weapon through hits in Sword mode, then switching to Axe mode to unleash a potent attack. This mechanic can be incredibly rewarding, as it builds up to a climactic moment in battle.

Why Switch Axe?

Switch Axe combos are notably more fluid and versatile. Unlike the Charge Blade, you're encouraged to frequently switch between Sword and Axe modes during combat. There's no need to charge the Axe, and the ability to use both forms seamlessly enhances your combos and targeting of monster parts.

Personally, I opted for the Switch Axe in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. The freedom from a rigid play pattern and the ability to freestyle combos were major advantages for me. While the Charge Blade's shield is useful, I find dodging more intuitive than blocking.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you decide between the Switch Axe and Charge Blade in *Monster Hunter Wilds*. For more tips and insights on the game, be sure to check out The Escapist.
