One of the most intricate features of *Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land* is the Synthesis mechanic, which is deeply integrated into the game’s core gameplay. Whether you're collecting resources or crafting weapons, Synthesis is at the heart of it all. Here’s how you can master this essential system.
Synthesis Types in Atelier Yumia
In *Atelier Yumia*, there are three distinct types of Synthesis:
- Regular Synthesis: This is performed at an Alchemist’s altar and is crucial for crafting weapons, armor, battle accessories, magical items, and the materials needed for other Synthesis processes. Early in the game, you unlock the Atelier, allowing you to return and Synthesize at any time. Additionally, in areas where you can build—such as cleared manabound zones and campsites—you can construct a Simple Altar for regular Synthesis.
- Simple Synthesis: Accessible from the radial menu, this type is used outside of battle to craft essential items like bandages, gauntlets for ziplines, and various repair kits for treasure chests, ladders, and more, provided you have the necessary resources.
- Building Synthesis: Accessed via the radial menu on specific plots of land, this mode lets you Synthesize storage chests and wall hangings. Although it's not directly labeled as Synthesis, the game often refers to it as such, so don't let the terminology confuse you.

How to Synthesize Equipment in Atelier Yumia
Regular Synthesis at altars is by far the most complex aspect of the mechanic. To craft an item like a gun staff for Yumia, you'll need to follow these steps:
- Find the recipe while exploring the world.
- Upgrade existing recipes at a Recipe Recall Station using particles from mana fountains.
- At an Alchemist’s altar, select the type of gun staff you wish to create.
- Choose Synthesis Skills if they're unlocked in the skill tree.
- Select the initial Alchemy Core to build upon, considering:
- Effects Alchemy Core: Enhances selected skills.
- Quality Alchemy Core: Boosts the quality level of the completed item.
- Trait Alchemy Core: Increases the number of Trait Crystal slots available.
- Fill the slots of each Alchemy Core with collected resources.
- Collect mana fragments to further increase the quality of your item.
- Finalize the process to Synthesize the item.
To craft powerful items early in the game, unlock Synthesis Skills from the skill tree as soon as possible. These skills provide significant boosts to damage and quality, and also allow you to duplicate items, conserving resources.
Enhance the item’s quality by adding resources to all three Alchemy Cores. Use the left or right bumper to navigate between cores when filling slots. Collecting mana fragments (the yellow sparkles around an Alchemy Core) for all three cores will substantially increase the item's strength, which is ideal unless you're crafting a quest-specific item.
When selecting resources, prioritize those that match the element type of specific slots, identified by a blue outline. You can organize your resources from the submenu to use higher-quality ones first, though prioritizing effects might be more beneficial depending on your needs.
If the complexity of Synthesis feels overwhelming, opt for the auto-Synthesis option after selecting Synthesis Skills. The game will automatically create the best possible item, allowing you to progress through the game, including defeating the final boss on Normal difficulty, with relative ease.
And that’s everything you need to know to fully utilize the Synthesis mechanic in *Atelier Yumia*.
