Prerequisites:

Before upgrading, acquire the Staff of Ice itself, either from the Mystery Box or by assembling its three parts. Early access to the Dark Aether Nexus (via the Door to Nowhere) is crucial.

Upgrade Steps:

Step 1: Freezing Dark Aether Crystals

Freeze three Dark Aether Crystals rapidly using the Staff of Ice. Perks like Stamin-Up and PHD Flopper (with Tribologist) significantly aid this step. Optimize your route; the quickest path involves the tomb area, Shrine of the Hierophants, and the Subterranean Temple entrance lantern (avoiding the lantern near Quick Revive due to distance). Successful completion triggers a quote from Archibald, signaling progression to the Dark Aether Nexus.

Step 2: Targeting Floating Runes

Within the Dark Aether Nexus, locate three floating rocks bearing glowing purple Runes. Each Rune displays a unique symbol; record these. Shoot each Rune with the Staff of Ice (a hitmarker confirms success). This lowers the rocks, making Rune identification easier. A scoped weapon can improve accuracy. The order of shooting is irrelevant.

Step 3: The Rune Symbol Puzzle

A stone wall replaces a portal in the main map, revealing a wall with Runic symbols. Identify and shoot the three symbols matching those from the floating rocks using the Staff of Ice. The portal opens regardless of correctness; however, incorrect selections teleport you to a random location within the Dark Aether Nexus. Multiple failures may require waiting for the next round. Correct selections place you on a floating rock with a purple orb. Interact with the orb.

Step 4: Orb Escort and Upgrade

The activated Orb begins moving; maintain proximity and eliminate zombies nearby. Killed zombies contribute purple energy to the Orb's movement. Guide the Orb to the central structure in the Dark Aether Nexus, where it creates a small purple portal. Interact with the portal to upgrade the Staff of Ice to the Ull's Arrow.
