Pearl Abyss, the developer behind the anticipated action-adventure game Crimson Desert, has reportedly rejected a Sony offer for PlayStation 5 exclusivity. The decision maintains the game's independent publishing trajectory.
Pearl Abyss Prioritizes Self-Publishing for Crimson Desert
Pearl Abyss confirmed its commitment to self-publishing Crimson Desert in a statement to Eurogamer, referencing previous public announcements. While acknowledging and appreciating its business partners, the developer emphasized its ongoing collaborations while retaining independent control.
The developer further clarified that no release date or definitive platform list has been finalized, dismissing recent speculation. A playable build will be showcased to media this week in Paris, followed by a public demonstration at G-Star in November.
Sony's Exclusivity Bid Rejected in Favor of Profitability
September investor meetings revealed Sony's attempt to secure Crimson Desert as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, potentially excluding Xbox platforms for a period. However, Pearl Abyss opted for self-publishing, citing higher projected profitability.
While a precise release date remains unannounced, a Q2 2025 launch on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox is anticipated. The final platform lineup, however, is still pending official confirmation.
