Amazon App Store on Android to Close After Over a Decade

Author : Jacob Update:Apr 28,2025

If you're a fan of the Amazon Appstore for Android, I've got some unfortunate news for you. Amazon has announced, as reported by TechCrunch, that they will be shutting down their app store on Android devices come August 20th this year. This marks the end of a journey that began back in 2011, showcasing a commendable run of over a decade in the competitive app marketplace.

However, this closure isn't a total shutdown. The Amazon Appstore will continue to thrive on Amazon's own devices, such as the Fire TV and Fire Tablet, ensuring that users of these platforms can still access their favorite apps without interruption. For developers and users who have relied on the Android version of the store, this news might be bittersweet. If you have apps installed from the Amazon Appstore on your Android device, be aware that future updates and support are not guaranteed.

It's somewhat ironic that this decision comes at a time when alternative app stores are gaining traction. Yet, Amazon's Appstore never quite became a household name in the app distribution world. Several factors might have contributed to this, including a lack of compelling incentives to draw in users and developers. For instance, the Epic Games Store has successfully attracted users with its free games program, something Amazon's Appstore did not replicate effectively.

This development serves as a reminder that even with the backing of a major corporation, longevity in the tech industry is not guaranteed. But don't worry, there's no need to fret.
