A domino set, often called a deck or pack, contains the gaming pieces. The classic Sino-European domino set includes 28 tiles, commonly known as bones, cards, tiles, or stones. Each domino is a rectangular tile divided by a line into two square ends, marked with spots or left blank. Domino sets are versatile gaming tools, much like playing cards or dice, suitable for various games. Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are used for Mexican Train, Chicken Foot, and similar games. Different countries have their own domino favorites: England has Muggins (All Fives), Scandinavia has Bergen, Mexico has Mexican Train, and Spain has Matador.

The earliest records of dominoes date back to China's Song Dynasty. Dominoes reached Italy in the 18th century, though the exact evolution from Chinese dominoes to the modern game remains unclear.

General domino rules:

Blocking Game

The basic two-player game uses a double six set. The 28 domino tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, leaving the rest unused. Players stand their tiles on-edge so they can see their own but not others' tiles, allowing everyone to track how many tiles opponents hold. One player starts by placing the first tile. The starting tile varies by game: Muggins begins with the highest double (6-6), Bergen with 0-0, and Mexican Train with the next lower double each round. This begins the line of play, where tiles connect end-to-end with matching numbers. Players take turns adding tiles to either end. The game ends when a player uses their last tile or when no moves are possible. In a block, the player who caused it collects all remaining points from others.

Scoring Game

Players earn points for specific moves or emptying their hand. Most scoring games are draw game variations. In Muggins (All Fives), the open ends must total a multiple of five. In Bergen, players score when open ends match. If a player fails to say "domino" before laying a tile and another player calls it, the first must draw an extra tile. In Mexican Train, the double zero scores 50 points.

Draw Game

In draw games (blocking or scoring), players may draw extra tiles from the stock before playing. The game score is the pips in the losing player's hand plus those in the stock, with two tiles usually left undrawn. The Draw Game is often simply called "dominos".
