If you own a BMW and need to clear fault codes or check the status of your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), the bimmer-tool application is your go-to solution. This powerful tool is designed to read and clear fault codes, request DPF regeneration, and access engine live data, making it an essential companion for BMW car maintenance.

For BMW models produced before 2008, please note that the application's functionality is somewhat limited. To ensure full compatibility, we recommend using a K+DCan USB cable connection. Wireless ELM adapters might not work with these older models, or some functions might be unavailable.

To use the bimmer-tool effectively, you'll need a reliable OBD adapter. Here are our recommended options:

• K+DCan cable
• ENET adapter (specifically for F/G series)
• Bluetooth adapters such as Vgate vLinker MC/FS/BM/FD, UniCarScan UCSI-2000/USCI-2100 (set to D-Can mode: MODE2), Carista, or Veepeak OBDCheck BLE.

The bimmer-tool offers a variety of functions to keep your BMW running smoothly:

• Check DPF regeneration status and detailed information
• Initiate DPF regeneration
• Reset DPF adaptation values, necessary after filter replacement
• Read exhaust fumes pressure
• Monitor injector adjustments
• View actual and expected values for air mass, intake manifold pressure, and fuel pressure
• Log data to a CSV file for in-depth analysis
• Register battery replacement without altering battery properties
• Reset lamp circuits blocked due to short-circuit errors
• Reset oil/brakes service and change intervals

Supported OBD adapters include:

• K+D-Can USB (most reliable, requires a USB-OTG cable)
• ENET cable/Wifi Adapter (recommended for F & G series, requires a USB-C to Ethernet adapter)
• ELM327 Bluetooth (may be slower, works with genuine ELM327 or PIC18-based adapters; may not work with older engines)
• ELM327 WiFi (may be less stable; mobile data transmission might need to be disabled)

To get started with the bimmer-tool:

1. Connect the adapter to the OBD II socket in your BMW.
2. Turn the ignition on.
3. Connect the adapter to your phone:
   • For USB: Use a USB-OTG cable and select the bimmer-tool app when prompted.
   • For Bluetooth: Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings, search for devices, and pair the adapter (PIN is usually 0000 or 1234).
   • For WiFi: Disable mobile data, turn on WiFi, and connect to the adapter's network.
4. Launch the bimmer-tool app, navigate to 'Car', and select your BMW's model and year.
5. Go to 'Connection', choose the connection type, adapter type, and communication protocol.
6. Tap the 'Connect' button to start.

Please be aware of the following limitations:

• For models before 2008 and e46/e39/e83/e53, the app requires a K+DCan cable connection and supports only the engine ECU. Wireless ELM adapters may not be compatible.

Common issues and solutions:

• If you encounter an 'Engine No response' error in cars up to 2007 using a BT/WiFi adapter, try selecting the ATWM option under advanced connection settings.
• If there's no connection despite correct settings, force stop all diagnostic apps (including bimmer-tool) in your phone's application manager, or restart your phone and attempt to connect again.

The bimmer-tool requires certain permissions to function optimally:

• Storage: Necessary for USB adapter support.
• Photos/Media/Files: Allows creation of CSV files.
• Pair with Bluetooth devices/access Bluetooth settings: Required for Bluetooth adapter support.
• Full network access: Needed for WiFi adapter support.
• Approximate location: Though theoretically possible to use Bluetooth for location, this app does not utilize this feature.
