Imagine this: you're not a knight, not a warrior, not even a ghost. No, you’re a walking lighthouse, powered not by gears or electricity, but by a perpetually cheerful, slightly unhinged bird who flaps around inside your glowing, tower-shaped body like it’s a backpack full of existential chaos. Your job? To guide lost ships through a stormy, dreamlike coastline where reality flickers like a dying bulb. The bird? It's not just decorative. It squawks advice, occasionally pecks at the lens to adjust the beam, and sometimes—sometimes—it flies out and glides across the waves, leaving you temporarily stranded and blinking in confusion. But it's always back, cawing, "Trust me, I've got this!" as if it’s never once caused a navigational disaster. You traverse shifting cliffs, fog that remembers your name, and islands that only appear when you stop to question your existence. Every step is a rhythm of creaking wood and squawking feathers. The sea whispers in riddles. And your only tool? A heartbeat-powered beam that pulses in time with the bird’s erratic drumming. Is it a game about loneliness? Responsibility? Or just a very strange metaphor for emotional support from a very unreliable friend? Either way, Keeper is a game you’d pick up because it looks like a children’s book from a parallel dimension that was accidentally uploaded to a horror mod. And honestly? You'd never let go. Not while the bird still caws, “I believe in you!” And the light still spins… And the sea still listens. Welcome to the watch, Keeper. The storm isn’t over. And neither is your weird, waddling, feathered destiny. 🕯️🐦🌊

Double Fine’s New Game Keeper Unveiled at Xbox Games Showcase — A Sentient Lighthouse with a Bird on Its Head

In a delightfully bizarre reveal during today’s Xbox Games Showcase, Double Fine has introduced their next game: Keeper. The teaser drops us into a surreal, dreamlike world where a towering, wobbly lighthouse—its base sprouting spindly legs—begins its journey across a fantastical landscape, guided by a quirky, wide-eyed bird perched atop its lantern.

The footage is pure Double Fine charm: whimsical visuals, offbeat humor, and that unmistakable emotional core that made Psychonauts 2 a standout. As the lighthouse—seemingly alive and animated by some mysterious inner spark—stumbles through meadows, over mountains, and into shifting dreamscapes, the bird atop it flaps and squawks, as if issuing commands or simply enjoying the ride.

While details remain under wraps, the game appears to explore themes of identity, purpose, and connection—perhaps questioning what it means to be “alive” when you’re a structure built to guide others, but now seeking meaning on your own.

We’re still not entirely sure:

  • Why the lighthouse can walk.
  • How the bird controls or communicates with it.
  • What the lighthouse is keeping—a memory? A secret? A dream?

But based on Double Fine’s track record, especially the critical acclaim for Psychonauts 2 (which earned an 8/10 from IGN), we’re already convinced: Keeper is shaping up to be a heartfelt, imaginative adventure that blends surreal storytelling with genuine emotional depth.

Double Fine previously told us Psychonauts 2 was a love letter to childhood wonder and self-discovery. With Keeper, it feels like they’re turning that lens inward—exploring what it means to be a guardian, a wanderer, or even a friend.

Keeper launches on October 17, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC—and from the look of it, this might just be one of the most original games of the year.

Stay tuned for more updates from IGN Live and our full coverage of the weekend’s biggest gaming reveals.
And yes—we’re already rooting for the lighthouse. 🕯️🐦✨
