"Chrono Trigger Marks 30 Years with Multiple Releases Planned"

Author : Zoe Update:May 22,2025

Square Enix has joyously announced that the iconic JRPG, Chrono Trigger, has reached its 30-year milestone. To commemorate this significant occasion, the company has teased a series of projects slated for release over the coming year. Although the specifics of these projects remain under wraps, the language used in the announcement hints that they might transcend the game itself, potentially encompassing various media or experiences.

This news has ignited a flurry of speculation within the fanbase, particularly among those who have long awaited a comprehensive remaster or a modern console release of the game. Despite Chrono Trigger's revered status as one of the most cherished JRPGs in history, it has yet to receive a full-blown remake or a re-release on PlayStation systems beyond the 1999 PS1 port. Over the years, the game has found its way onto PC and mobile platforms, but fans still yearn for a definitive modern edition. Given Square Enix's history of revisiting its classic titles, there is always a glimmer of hope. However, the only confirmed event for the anniversary so far is a special livestream concert showcasing its legendary soundtrack. This concert will be streamed on YouTube on March 14th, starting at 7:00 p.m. PT and continuing into the early hours of the next morning.

For those new to the series, Chrono Trigger is an epic time-traveling RPG developed by a stellar team that included Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest mastermind Yuji Horii, and the legendary Dragon Ball artist Akira Toriyama. Originally launched in 1995 for the Super Famicom and SNES, the game follows protagonist Crono and his companions as they traverse different eras—from a prehistoric world teeming with dinosaurs to a dystopian future threatened by an alien force. Players recruit allies, manipulate history, and confront one of the most memorable final bosses in gaming.

The 30th anniversary marks a monumental milestone for Chrono Trigger, and while there's no confirmation yet on a remake or a console port, Square Enix's statement keeps the possibility alive. Stay tuned to Chrono Trigger's X page for the latest updates on what's in store.
