A Retro Gaming Retrospective: Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Titles on Nintendo Switch
This article takes a unique look at the surprisingly limited selection of Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports available on the Nintendo Switch eShop, excluding those found within the Nintendo Switch Online app. We've compiled a list of ten exceptional titles, four from the GBA and six from the DS, showcasing the best of what's available outside the subscription service. No particular ranking is implied.
Game Boy Advance Gems
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration provides a solid and enjoyable experience. A worthwhile play, especially for comparison, offering a streamlined approach to the original. Even non-shooter fans often find themselves captivated by its charm.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a true successor. This side-scrolling action title, the first in an excellent series, may exhibit some initial rough edges, but these are refined in later installments. Begin your journey here and experience the evolution of the series firsthand.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, but justified by its distinct gameplay. Unlike Mega Man Zero, this is an RPG featuring a unique blend of action and strategic elements within its battle system. The intriguing concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries see diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
Part of a worthwhile collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite, even surpassing the acclaimed Symphony of the Night for me on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS Delights
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Initially a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge achieved wider recognition on DSiWare. This entry firmly established Shantae's popularity, ensuring her continued presence across console generations. Its origins are rooted in an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features compelling writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you utilize your abilities to save others while unraveling the mystery of your own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
Considered a top-tier Nintendo DS title, The World Ends With You is best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a DS, offering a great gaming experience.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
Part of the recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls compared to its original touch controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games within the collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
Though challenging to fully replicate outside the DS/3DS ecosystem, Atlus's adaptation remains playable. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, offers a substantial RPG experience despite its complexities.
