Apple Unveils iPhone 16e: The New Budget-Friendly Option

Author : Andrew Update:Mar 27,2025

On Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, now the most budget-friendly model in its current lineup. This new addition replaces the 2022 iPhone SE as the "affordable" option, though it marks a departure from the substantial discounts the SE line was known for. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e narrows the price gap with the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e begin on Friday, Feb. 21, with the official release following on Friday, Feb. 28.

The iPhone 16e introduces Apple's new C1 cellular modem, marking the company's first venture into in-house modem technology. Apple has seen success with its proprietary chips, such as the M1 and subsequent models in its computers and the A-series in its mobile devices. The modem is a crucial yet often overlooked component in smartphones, and any shortcomings with the C1 could lead to connectivity issues. Apple's past "Antennagate" scandal with the iPhone 4, which suffered from signal strength problems due to antenna design, underscores the importance of getting this right. Hopefully, Apple has ensured the iPhone 16e's connectivity is robust.

From the front, the iPhone 16e closely resembles the iPhone 14, featuring an identical 6.1-inch OLED display with a 2532x1170 resolution and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. While not as sharp or bright as the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e includes the Action button and a USB-C port, though it lacks the Camera Control feature.

The back of the iPhone 16e sets it apart with a single 48MP camera, similar to the iPhone SE. This camera shares many traits with the iPhone 16's main camera but misses out on advanced features like sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic styles, and adjustable focus in portrait mode. The front-facing camera, however, is identical to the iPhone 16, bringing Face ID to the iPhone 16e.

The iPhone 16e is encased in aluminum with a glass back and Apple's Ceramic Shield on the front. While Apple touts Ceramic Shield as "tougher than any smartphone glass," it's worth noting that a newer version claims to be "two times tougher." This raises questions about the durability of the older Ceramic Shield used in the iPhone 16e, especially considering the wear and tear observed on the iPhone 16's display during reviews.

Internally, the iPhone 16e demonstrates Apple's product stratification strategy. While it shares the "A18" chip with the iPhone 16, it features a 4-core GPU instead of the 5-core GPU found in the iPhone 16. This suggests a performance step down from the iPhone 16, which already lags slightly behind the iPhone 16 Pro. However, the iPhone 16e retains the Neural Engine, enabling access to Apple Intelligence features.

The iPhone 16e, priced at $599, represents a compromise to achieve a lower price point compared to other models in Apple's lineup. While not as heavily discounted as the early iPhone SE models, which started at $429, the iPhone 16e is based on a more recent design. The 2022 iPhone SE, despite its dated design, offered a nearly 50% discount compared to the then $799 iPhone 13.

The performance of the iPhone 16e remains to be seen. With compelling alternatives like the OnePlus 13R available around $600 in the Android market, Apple may struggle to attract buyers outside its ecosystem.
