Ubisoft's latest entry in the iconic stealth-action open-world series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has finally arrived, transporting players to the rich historical setting of 16th-century Japan. With over 30 titles released under the Assassin’s Creed banner, we're focusing solely on the "mainline games" for this ranking, excluding mobile, side-scrolling, VR entries, and spin-offs like Bloodlines or Liberation.
The journey began in 2007 with Desmond Miles stepping into the Animus to relive the life of his ancestor Altaïr. Now, 18 years later, players take on the roles of Naoe and Yasuke in Japan. Assassin’s Creed Shadows marks the 14th installment in the core series. I've personally ranked these games using an IGN Tier List, based on my enjoyment of each title. Here's a glimpse at my ranking:
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains my top favorite, nestled in the S-tier. The blend of island exploration, exhilarating ship combat, and a vibrant cast creates what I believe to be the quintessential AC experience. It's accompanied by Assassin’s Creed 2, the game that truly propelled the series into the spotlight. In the A-tier, I've placed Valhalla, which might surprise some, but I adored its Viking-themed combat and the addictive Orlog minigame. Unity sits alongside it, its stunning recreation of French Revolution-era Paris still impressing a decade on.
Do you disagree with my rankings? Perhaps you think Valhalla is overly bloated, or that Assassin’s Creed 2 is overrated? Why not create your own tier list of the mainline AC games and see how your S, A, B, C, and D tiers stack up against the IGN community?
