Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive in to discover what's new in Civ 7 VR and the latest updates on Civ 7.
Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is taking a bold step into virtual reality, exclusively launching on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. 2K Games and Firaxis Games made this exciting announcement on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, marking the franchise's first venture into VR and mixed reality.
Civ 7's Executive Franchise Producer, Dennis Shirk, expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on 2K's website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, also shared his confidence in the partnership, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 is coming to PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be available on PSVR2 at the time of writing.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table experience, allowing players to immerse themselves in the game as if they were playing a tabletop strategy game. Players can zoom in to appreciate the intricate details of buildings and units or take a broader view to strategize on a grand scale.
The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality, enabling seamless switching between modes. In VR, players find themselves in a beautifully crafted museum overlooking a personalized vista for their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to the player's real-world environment, enhancing the gaming experience.
Civ 7 VR offers various play modes, including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer. Up to four players can join a game using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or challenge friends directly, all while seeing each other as their chosen world leaders across the Command Table. Note that online multiplayer requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has taken player feedback seriously since the early access period of Civ 7. Following mixed reviews on Steam, particularly regarding the User Interface, the team has committed to significant improvements. In a statement on their official Twitter (X) page, they announced plans to enhance UI interactions, improve map readability, and address other areas of polish.
In response to community requests, Firaxis Games plans to add features such as teams in multiplayer games, a broader range of map types, and more. They have also promised a quality-of-life update in March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crises adjustments, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific release date has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see its worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
