Attention all Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for Destiny 2 under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four major content updates, including two new expansions and significant enhancements to the core game, catering to both paying and free-to-play users.
Kicking off the Year of Prophecy is the "Rite of the Nine," a free update available to all players. This update reimagines dungeon diving, making it accessible and thrilling for both veterans and newcomers. Familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep will feature unique twists, allowing players to reconnect with Orin and discover refreshed dungeon weapons.
Mark your calendars for July 15, as the first paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," launches. This expansion introduces a multiyear saga centered around the mysterious Nine, predating even the Traveler. New characters, Lodi and Ikora, will play pivotal roles, and players will explore the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeon puzzles and exploration, Kepler offers new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Alongside The Edge of Fate, Bungie is rolling out major core game innovations on July 15. Expect revised armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting, and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This screen will allow players to choose from Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, designed for solo players seeking short, self-contained gameplay. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will offer deeper gameplay customization and curated activity rotations to keep the game fresh and engaging.

On September 9, the "Ash & Iron" major update will launch, followed by the second expansion, "Renegades," on December 2. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" update on March 3. "Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
This news comes as a positive development for Destiny 2 players, especially after Bungie's layoffs in July 2024, affecting 220 staff members, following another 100 layoffs less than a year prior.
While Destiny 2 remains a focal point, Bungie is also working on the Marathon reboot, revealed in May 2023. After a recent hands-on preview, IGN reported that Marathon is shaping up to be a promising addition to Bungie's portfolio, set to launch on PC and consoles in September.
