FromSoftware has recently unveiled more details about its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has notably influenced not only the game's style but also the design of its central hub area's keeper, introducing a character that breaks from FromSoftware's traditional aesthetic.
During the Switch 2 Direct, the trailer concluded with a striking image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, captivating the audience's attention. This character, as it turns out, will serve as the hub companion in The Duskbloods.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki elaborated on this new character in an interview with Nintendo, saying, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further explained the design choice, stating, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki added with a laugh, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman."
FromSoftware's hub keepers have always played crucial roles in their games, acting as familiar figures who assist players throughout their journeys. Characters like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll are known for providing players with power and guidance. In The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the winged rat's role in assisting players remains a mystery, but Miyazaki hinted at innovative elements, saying, "The team at FromSoft has tried its hands at introducing a lot of new and interesting ideas."
The Duskbloods is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, and fans can look forward to more updates, including reactions from the Bloodborne community and Miyazaki's thoughts on FromSoftware's future with single-player games.
