A recent report from Niko Partners, a leading video game market research firm, suggests Square Enix and Tencent are collaborating on a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV. Let's delve into the details of this intriguing joint venture.
Square Enix and Tencent: A Potential FFXIV Mobile Game Partnership
The Unconfirmed Buzz
Niko Partners' report highlights 15 games recently approved for release in China by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). Among them, a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly developed by Tencent, stands out. Other notable titles on the approved list include a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, along with two Marvel-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game based on Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of a Tencent-developed Final Fantasy XIV mobile game circulated last month, neither Square Enix nor Tencent has officially confirmed the project.
According to Niko Partners' analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd post on X (formerly Twitter), the mobile FFXIV game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, he emphasizes that this information stems largely from industry speculation and lacks official confirmation.
Given Tencent's dominance in the mobile gaming market, this rumored partnership aligns with Square Enix's declared strategy. Earlier in May, Square Enix announced a shift towards a "multiplatform strategy," aiming for broader releases across various platforms for key titles like Final Fantasy. This potential collaboration with Tencent seems to be a significant step in that direction.
