Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. In a recent video from their Nintendo Today app, the company showcased the official Switch 2 carry case, designed to hold up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges securely.
As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges are identical in size and shape to those of the original Switch, allowing the new console to use a single cartridge slot for games from both generations. However, there is one notable difference: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that appears to be consistent across all games, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. If you haven't yet downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can still view the video shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter.
The top of the cartridge's printed design sticker now sports a Switch 2 logo, distinguishing it from the original Switch cartridges. Inside the official Switch 2 carrying case, there's ample space for the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps. The size similarity between Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges comes as no surprise to fans.

Apart from the color and logo, Switch 2 cartridges remain identical to their predecessors, including the notorious foul-tasting coating intended to prevent players from putting them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," stated Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
