According to various sources, the game has sold approximately 890,000 copies on Steam alone. Currently, KCD2 ranks as the second top-selling game on Steam, behind Counter-Strike 2, and the fifth most-played game, trailing CS2, Dota 2, Marvel Rivals, and Banana.
KCD2 sold 1 million copies on its launch day, and with the estimated Steam sales, the game is on track to reach 2 million copies sold soon.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Attention To Detail
The opening weekend success of KCD2 can be attributed to Warhorse Studios' meticulous attention to detail, enhancing immersion and player enjoyment. The series is known for its commitment to realism, such as food spoiling, the need to clean clothes and armor, and maintaining sharp swords. KCD2 continues this tradition, further immersing players in a 15th-century medieval setting.
KCD2 Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner shared with GamesRadar a new stealth mechanic that players must consider. Bittner explained that as players accumulate dirt and grime, they can acquire a debuff that affects their stealth. "If you get the debuff that, you know, your body odor, you smell. There's like a circle around you," Bittner said. He added, "Basically, you're broadcasting, like, I'm here."
The game also introduces a new weapon type called "handgonnes," offering a historically accurate depiction of early firearms. Bittner spoke with PC Gamer about the challenges of using handgonnes, noting their long reload times, inaccuracy, and safety issues. He admitted, "So we knew it was going to be a meme weapon, but we were cool with it."
KCD2 PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling emphasized their goal of authenticity over hyperaccuracy. "We want to have an intriguing and cool and fun and nice video game. However, we try extremely hard to make it as authentic as possible. We double-check the stuff, so that when the player plays it, or whenever someone checks it, that the things that are listed in there are at least plausible," he said.
Post-Launch Roadmap
Warhorse Studios has outlined a post-launch roadmap to keep players engaged beyond the initial release. KCD2 will offer free updates and paid DLC content throughout 2025.
The free updates will include the Barber feature, Hardcore mode, and Horse Racing, expected to launch in Spring 2025. Paid DLCs will start in Summer with "Brushes with Death," followed by "Legacy of the Forge" in Autumn, and "Mysteria Ecclesiae" in Winter.
With its phenomenal opening weekend success, KCD2 is poised to maintain its commercial momentum with these updates and future DLCs, potentially setting new records along the way.
