Mahershala Ali has shared disappointing updates about Marvel's delayed Blade movie while promoting Jurassic World Rebirth. First announced at 2019's San Diego Comic-Con with a planned November 2024 release, the troubled project has gone through multiple directors with no progress in six years.
The situation became concerning eight months ago when Marvel removed Blade from its release schedule without providing a new date. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige later assured fans: "We're committed to Blade. We love the character and Mahershala's portrayal. When we adjust plans, we keep fans informed - you're seeing everything we are."
Ali's recent comments offer little reassurance. When pressed by Variety, the Oscar winner simply said: "Call Marvel. I'm ready - let them know." Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he expanded slightly: "I'd love Blade to happen, but I don't know Marvel's current plans. Right now I'm just seeking my next great role."
Behind-the-Scenes Troubles
Various creatives have revealed glimpses into the project's collapse:
- Musician Flying Lotus confirmed he was hired to compose before production stalled: "I doubt it's happening now, but scoring Blade would have been incredible."
- Costume designer Ruth Carter disclosed her planned 1920s aesthetic for the shelved film during a podcast appearance
- Co-star Delroy Lindo noted the creative team's initial enthusiasm: "The collaborative energy was amazing before everything derailed."
MCU's Blade Void
The franchise's Blade-shaped hole became more apparent after Deadpool & Wolverine's massive $1.3 billion success, featuring Wesley Snipes' cameo as the iconic vampire hunter. Ryan Reynolds has since championed giving Snipes a proper farewell film, acknowledging: "Blade paved the way for all modern superhero cinema - he's Marvel's founding father. He deserves a sendoff like Logan."
