Warner Bros. Games Announces MultiVersus Shutdown
MultiVersus Season 5: The Grand Finale
MultiVersus' journey is set to conclude with its fifth and final season. The game's official Twitter (X) account broke the news on January 31, 2025, revealing that MultiVersus will shut down permanently on May 30, 2025. A detailed blog post from Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
Kicking off on February 4, 2025, and running until May 30, 2025, MultiVersus Season 5 will introduce two exciting new characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. Players can earn all new Season 5 content, including these characters, through gameplay. Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will no longer be downloadable from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
No specific reasons for the shutdown have been officially disclosed by MultiVersus.
Embracing MultiVersus' Offline Experience
Following the end of Season 5, MultiVersus will transition to an offline mode, allowing players to continue their adventures locally. To access this feature, players need to download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Upon logging in, the game will generate a local save file linked to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account. This ensures you can enjoy MultiVersus offline, retaining all your earned and purchased content.
As of January 31, 2025, real money transactions for Gleamium, the game's premium currency, have ceased. However, players can still utilize any remaining Gleamium to acquire in-game content until the end of Season 5.
MultiVersus: A Journey from Public Beta to Shutdown
MultiVersus first captivated audiences with its public beta launch in July 2022, offering a free-to-play fighting game experience reminiscent of Super Smash Bros. but with a unique 2v2 team format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open beta saw numerous updates and two seasons of content.
The game was relaunched in May 2024 with enhancements including new characters, rollback netcode, a PvE mode, new currencies, and more. Despite these improvements, player dissatisfaction persisted due to technical glitches, frequent disconnections, and the game's microtransactions. By July 2024, MultiVersus experienced a significant 70% drop in player count on PS4 and PS5.
MultiVersus will officially close its servers on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, leaving behind a legacy with 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
You can download MultiVersus on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
