If you're a fan of The Last of Us eagerly awaiting news on a potential Part 3, you might want to temper your expectations. Neil Druckmann, the series' creator, has recently poured cold water on the hopes of a sequel in a detailed interview with Variety, primarily focused on the upcoming TV series adaptation. When questioned about The Last of Us Part 3, Druckmann's response was clear and disheartening:
“I was waiting for this question,” he said with a sigh. “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
Whether you choose to take Druckmann's words at face value is up to you. Currently, Naughty Dog is deeply invested in their new project, Intergalactic, unveiled at The Game Awards last December. Given the absence of a release window for Intergalactic, it's likely years away from completion. With their focus shifted to the cosmos, the chances of Naughty Dog working on The Last of Us Part 3 anytime soon seem slim. Druckmann might be playing it close to the chest, or he might genuinely be finished with the series. Only time will tell.
For those still hungry for more The Last of Us, the television series offers a silver lining. The second season is set to premiere on April 13 on Max. While Druckmann remains uncertain about the number of seasons needed to fully adapt the story of Part 2, an HBO executive suggested in February that four seasons could be the perfect fit.
