Circumstantial Evidence Suggests Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Mice
Recent findings suggest the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional functionality: computer mouse emulation. While the practicality of this feature for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The evidence originates from Vietnamese customs data accessed by Famiboards user LiC, who previously uncovered information related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, recently revealed references to polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at a potential mouse-like functionality for the Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified in the shipping manifests. These designations are not found in public component databases, suggesting they may represent unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, appears large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a Novel Concept: Lenovo Legion GO Precedent
While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not entirely unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this feature in its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic housing to facilitate this mode.
The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities offer a potential preview of Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console.
