Nintendo Switch 2's C Button: Weird Function Revealed [UPDATE]

Author : Sadie Update:May 17,2025

Updated on January 14: The original version of this article linked to a different Discord server, also called "Nintendo Switch 2." The link has been changed to reflect the real source of the datamining effort. The original story is as follows.

Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2's rumored C button may be used for chat functionality.
  • Some recent datamining efforts suggest the Switch 2 will support a group and voice chat feature code-named Campus.
  • The next Nintendo console will reportedly be officially revealed on January 16.

The C button rumored to be a feature of the Nintendo Switch 2 could potentially be dedicated to chat-related functions, according to a recent report. This revelation could provide crucial insights into one of the most enigmatic aspects of Nintendo's upcoming console hardware.

Since late 2024, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been the subject of numerous leaks. Industry analysts believe these leaks coincide with the console entering mass production around that time. All these unofficial glimpses of the upcoming device have consistently shown it to feature an additional button compared to its predecessor. Marked with a dark gray "C," this mysterious button is often depicted on the right Joy-Con, just below the home button. However, until recently, the purpose of this button remained a mystery.

A new theory about the C button has emerged from datamining efforts focused on the latest version of the Switch OS. According to a report from a rapidly expanding Discord server dedicated to the Switch 2, the newest firmware contains references to a feature code-named "Campus." This feature is believed to be linked to group and voice chat support for Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscribers.

Nintendo Switch 2 Will Reportedly Support Screen Sharing

The same source indicates that Campus will enable screen sharing and allow chat groups to accommodate up to 12 users. If this feature is connected to the new button on the Nintendo Switch 2, the "C" is more likely to represent "chat" rather than "Campus." This development challenges the popular fan theory that the C button might be used for casting the Switch 2's screen to another device.

Chat Support Isn't Exactly in Line With the Switch's Kid-Friendly Design

Given that group and voice chats require internet connectivity, it's probable that the Switch 2 would reserve such features for NSO subscribers. However, this remains speculative, especially considering the Switch's original design aimed to distance itself from such capabilities. By not including user-to-user chat functions, the Switch maintains a more kid-friendly environment. Reintroducing a feature akin to the Miiverse text chat could potentially create issues that Nintendo might prefer to avoid.

The true nature and purpose of the rumored C button on the Nintendo Switch 2 could be clarified soon. According to multiple sources, the console is set to be officially announced on Thursday, January 16.
