NetEase's upcoming open-world RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, has been rebranded as Ananta. Initially revealed at Gamescom 2023, the game has finally unveiled a new trailer, promising further details on December 5th.
The Reason Behind the Name Change Remains a Mystery
While developers haven't commented, the Sanskrit word "Ananta," meaning "infinite," aligns with the original Japanese "Mugen," also signifying infinity. The Chinese title further supports this interpretation.
The name change has sparked mixed reactions within the gaming community, though the continued development is a welcome relief. Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually impressive, its lack of gameplay footage puts it behind its competitor in the eyes of some. However, many find Ananta's aesthetic more captivating.
A Curious Turn of Events
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all prior social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of video views. Only the Discord server remains, simply renamed to reflect the title change. This unexpected move has puzzled many gamers.
Ananta casts players as an "Infinite Trigger," a supernatural investigator confronting paranormal disturbances. The game features characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
