This week, the highly-regarded Samsung 990 Evo Plus PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe solid state drive is on sale. Amazon is currently selling the 2TB version for just $129.99 with free shipping, while the 4TB model has dropped to $252.01, also with free shipping. This is a superb, high-speed SSD for your PlayStation 5 console (we suggest adding a heatsink) and as a boot drive for your gaming PC. These prices are $40 to $50 lower than the Samsung 990 Pro, and most gamers won't perceive a performance difference.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is an outstanding drive for both your gaming PC and PlayStation 5. It surpasses Sony's minimum speed requirement for the PS5, with sequential speeds reaching up to 7,250MB/s read and 6,300MB/s write. It's significantly faster than the standard 990 Evo, though not quite as speedy as the 990 Pro. The primary distinction from the pricier 990 Pro is that this model is DRAM-less. For PS5 performance, this is irrelevant. For gaming PCs, the 990 Evo Plus supports HMB (host memory buffer), which compensates for the missing DRAM by using a negligible amount of system RAM. Gamers won't notice any performance gap.
The Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a pre-installed heatsink. However, it features a newer single-sided design that is power-efficient and generates less heat than older SSDs. This means you likely don't need a heatsink, and it should function perfectly in a PS5 without thermal throttling. Still, a PS5-compatible heatsink costs under $10, so getting one for peace of mind is a good idea.
