Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be available as a physical Nintendo Switch game, with the complete base game stored on a 64GB cartridge.
Switch 2 Game-Key Cards are physical cards that provide a code to download your selected game. This means the card itself contains no game data—you’ll need to download the full game after inserting the card. While each Game-Key Card box is clearly labeled on the front, this approach has unsettled some gamers, particularly those who value owning physical copies rather than just digital licenses.
This is especially welcome news for Sonic fans, as there had been confusion and mixed reports surrounding CrossWorlds specifically. Now, Sega has cleared up all uncertainty, confirming in a new FAQ that "the physical version includes the full base game on a 64GB cartridge."
The FAQ also confirmed that crossplay will be supported for Nintendo Switch 2 players, save data will transfer from the original Switch to the newer system, and a $10 upgrade pack will be available for those wishing to transition to the Switch 2 version later.
In contrast, Square Enix faced backlash earlier this week after confirming that its Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake on Switch 2 would offer “no upgrade path” and that save files wouldn’t be compatible across platforms.
Sega has stated that CrossWorlds will feature an expansive roster of playable characters, including DLC. Classic characters like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Shadow, and Tails are all present, but now you can also add characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
CrossWorlds is, of course, set to compete with Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 exclusive kart racer that has so far declined to include guest characters from outside Nintendo’s universe. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is launching on both the Switch and Switch 2, meaning we’re poised for a classic Mario versus Sonic kart racing showdown when Sega’s title arrives in September.
IGN recently went hands-on with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and left impressed. “It’s a vibe,” they said, “and one that I’ve enjoyed and look forward to drifting through.”
