The moderators of the SnyderCut subreddit have removed a controversial post urging fans to review bomb the upcoming Superman movie and issued a clarifying statement to their community.
Earlier this week, DC Studios head James Gunn responded to viral screenshots of the post, which had encouraged SnyderVerse supporters to mobilize on July 11th. The since-deleted content suggested tactics like spreading spoilers, leaving negative reviews, and artificially inflating ticket reservations without completing purchases.
"Gunn fired the first shot by ending the Snyderverse, and this is our chance to fight back," the inflammatory post concluded.
After a Threads user alerted Gunn to the campaign, the director/producer downplayed its potential impact:
"Lol I think we'll survive," Gunn responded. "I'm not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's a guy) are going to impact the course of events."
The SnyderCut moderators later confirmed they had removed the post approximately two hours after publication, noting it had minimal engagement beforehand. However, screenshots had already spread across social media platforms.
In a locked thread, the mod team clarified their position:
"Our staff never approved that post and does not endorse its content. As an open subreddit, posts aren't pre-approved. Appearance here doesn't equal endorsement. We remove content violating our or Reddit's policies—this clearly crossed multiple lines.
"The post wasn't controversial—it was universally criticized. While we support individual boycott decisions, we don't condone dishonest tactics aimed at manipulating others' viewing choices."
This incident marks another chapter in the complicated relationship between Zack Snyder's fanbase and current DC leadership. Snyder's supporters previously influenced Warner Bros.' 2021 release of Justice League's Snyder Cut. More recently, Suicide Squad (2016) director David Ayer had to address backlash after expressing support for Gunn's Superman and its trailer.
Ayer, whose divisive DC film existed within Snyder's discontinued universe, initially pleaded with fans not to revive "Ayer Cut" campaigns during Superman's marketing. The director eventually announced he was stepping back from online DC discussions following heated responses.
Gunn addressed portions of the SnyderVerse fandom rooting against Superman's success during a Rolling Stone interview:
"I don't mind it—some opposition is healthy," Gunn explained. "One of our lead actors reads everything online and gets distressed by negativity. I reminded him our trailer received 97-98% positive reactions. A small opposition actually helps—it prevents everything from seeming artificially perfect.
"While some criticisms get absurd—like debating whether sunlight should hurt Superman—I understand controversy comes with the territory."
During the same interview, Gunn shared his reasoning for dropping subtitles from both this July's Superman and next year's Supergirl installment.
