Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus strategy, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 starting in January 2026. This change will see PlayStation 4 games being removed from the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog, as detailed in a recent PlayStation Blog post alongside the reveal of February 2025's monthly titles.
"As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog," Sony stated. This decision underscores their move towards the newer console, although it won't affect the monthly titles that players have already claimed. However, titles in the Games Catalog will remain available until they are cycled out during the monthly refresh.
Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to "continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive," including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, and online game save storage. As part of this evolution, they aim to introduce new PS5 titles monthly to keep the service fresh and engaging for subscribers.

The PS4, launched in 2013 and succeeded by the PS5 in 2020, has been a staple in gaming for over a decade. With the PS5 now more than four years old, Sony notes that "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles."
It remains uncertain whether Sony will reclassify PS4 games into the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Any updates on this front are expected to be announced as the transition date approaches.
