News about Sony Removes PS3 Classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS5, PS4 in Major PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see 22 games removed from the service, including high-profile titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This significant update to the PlayStation Plus library will take effect on May 20, 2025.

PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service for PlayStation platforms, offering benefits such as free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer, and member-exclusive discounts. Additionally, it provides a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games for Extra and Premium members, enhancing the gaming experience across the board.

As highlighted by Push Square, the removal of these 22 games includes two notable first-party PS3 games, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which will no longer be available on the PS Plus Premium library. This move is particularly significant because these titles are no longer purchasable on the PlayStation Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the last resort for playing them—unless you own both games and a functioning PS3.

Both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 were added to the PS Plus library at the end of 2024, and their removal comes less than a year later. Developed by Insomniac Games, the Resistance series is known for its alternate history first-person shooter gameplay, following the success of their Ratchet and Clank series. The franchise saw three PS3 releases before Insomniac shifted focus to other projects like Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles.

While Sony rarely removes first-party games from PlayStation Plus, it's not unprecedented, as seen with the unexpected removal of both Horizon games—Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West—in August 2024. Unlike those games, which were still available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will be completely inaccessible on modern consoles after their removal.

Notably, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the PS4 title InFamous: Second Son will also be removed from PS Plus.

Insomniac's Resistance series has been inactive for some time. In February, Insomniac founder and outgoing president Ted Price mentioned a strong push for a Resistance 4, which ultimately did not receive approval. This mirrors the fate of other dormant series like Guerrilla's Killzone.
