Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with a monumental update, version 2.0, set to launch on May 13th. Since its debut in 2024, the game has struggled to capture the audience that Supercell hoped for. With this significant overhaul, the developers are aiming to revitalize the game and draw in new players.
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 is more than just an update; it's a complete reboot of the game. The core mechanics, from battles to victory conditions, are undergoing a major transformation.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of Heroes. Players will now select a Hero to lead their squad into battle. These Heroes are drawn from existing characters, and the stakes are high: if your Hero falls, you lose the match.
Combat mechanics are also being revamped. Gone are the days of stopping to fight; now, movement and attacks are seamlessly integrated, resulting in more dynamic, fast-paced, and intense battles.
Victory conditions have shifted as well. Instead of eliminating all opponents, players only need to defeat the enemy Hero to win. This change has sparked some debate among players, with some feeling it veers too closely to a Brawl Stars-style gameplay.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
To make room for these new elements, several old game modes are being removed, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Additionally, some older skins and progression systems are being phased out. Supercell plans to compensate players with Hero Points and other in-game items.

It's clear why Supercell is pushing these changes so quickly. Squad Busters hasn't yet achieved the popularity of other Supercell titles like Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars.
With the first anniversary approaching on May 29th, Supercell is pulling out all the stops to reignite interest. They're launching a series of daily piñata events, offering players the chance to unlock a new Hero, Mortis.
