Virtua Fighter's Return: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled
Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter installment, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative dormancy. The last major release, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (a remaster), launched in 2021. This new entry, however, promises a completely original experience.
The recently released in-engine footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, isn't actual gameplay. Instead, it's a meticulously choreographed demonstration, showcasing the game's visual style. The flawlessly executed moves suggest a cinematic approach, more akin to a Hong Kong action film than a typical fighting game recording. This polished presentation hints at the high production values Sega is aiming for.
Evolving Visuals: A Blend of Realism and Style
The video offers a glimpse into the game's visual direction, showcasing a departure from the franchise's earlier, more stylized polygonal aesthetic. The graphics appear to strike a balance between the realism of Tekken 8 and the stylistic flair of Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured in two distinct outfits, a notable change from his classic look.
Development by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, renowned for the Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, is leading the development of this new title, alongside their work on Project Century. This suggests a commitment to delivering a high-quality, story-driven experience.
While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's previous statements and Sega's ongoing promotional efforts confirm their dedication to reviving the Virtua Fighter brand. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared in the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The upcoming release is poised to make the 2020s a significant era for fighting game enthusiasts.
