Tencent Acquires Majority Stake in Kuro Games, Developer of Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven
Tech giant Tencent has reportedly secured a controlling interest in Kuro Games, the acclaimed developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.
Tencent's Increased Ownership
Tencent's share in Kuro Games has jumped to approximately 51.4%, solidifying its position as the majority shareholder. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the subsequent departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external investor in Kuro Games.
Maintaining Independence
Despite the significant ownership change, Kuro Games assures its continued operational independence. Similar to Tencent's relationships with Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars), Kuro Games intends to maintain its creative autonomy. The company's official statement highlights that this move will foster a more stable environment, supporting its long-term independence strategy. Tencent has yet to publicly confirm the acquisition.
Kuro Games' Success
Kuro Games has achieved notable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue. The ongoing updates and continued success of these titles, with Wuthering Waves even receiving a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards, underscore Kuro Games' potential.
