Palworld's Unexpected Path: Pocketpair CEO Rejects AAA Status Despite Massive Success
Palworld's phenomenal success has generated substantial profits for developer Pocketpair, potentially enabling the creation of a game exceeding AAA standards. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has confirmed the studio's intention to pursue a different direction. This article explores his reasoning.
Pocketpair Prioritizes Indie Development and Community Support
Palworld's revenue, according to Mizobe in a recent GameSpark interview, is in the "tens of billions of yen" (tens of millions of USD). Despite this windfall, he believes Pocketpair lacks the infrastructure to manage a project of such immense scale.
Mizobe explained that Palworld's development was funded by profits from previous titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon. This time, however, the company will not replicate this approach, choosing instead to remain true to its indie roots.
"Scaling our next game with these profits would not only surpass AAA standards, but also outstrip our current organizational capabilities," Mizobe stated. He prefers projects that resonate with the indie gaming community, citing the advantages of smaller-scale development.
He highlights the challenges of AAA game development, contrasting it with the burgeoning indie scene's improved engine technology and favorable market conditions. Pocketpair attributes its growth significantly to the indie community and intends to reciprocate this support.
Palworld's Expansion into New Media
Mizobe previously stated that Pocketpair will not expand its team or relocate to larger offices, opting instead to expand the Palworld IP through diverse media.
Palworld, currently in early access, has received widespread acclaim for its engaging gameplay and consistent updates. Recent additions include a PvP arena and a new island in the Sakurajima update. Furthermore, Pocketpair and Sony have established Palworld Entertainment to oversee global licensing and merchandising.
