Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Minecraft 2: A Spiritual Successor on the Horizon?

Minecraft's creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, has ignited a firestorm of excitement among fans by hinting at a potential Minecraft 2. In a recent poll on X (formerly Twitter), Notch revealed he's working on a game blending roguelike elements (think ADOM) with first-person dungeon crawling (like Eye of the Beholder). However, he also expressed openness to developing a "spiritual successor" to his iconic creation.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the Minecraft 2 option dominating the poll, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes. Given Minecraft's enduring popularity—with tens of millions of daily players—this isn't surprising.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he "basically announced Minecraft 2." He believes fans desire a new Minecraft-esque game from him, and he's enthusiastic about revisiting his passion project. He clarified that while he's open to either project, the overwhelmingly positive response to the Minecraft 2 poll significantly influences his decision. He acknowledges the potential risks of creating a spiritual successor, noting their unpredictable nature. However, the significant fan demand and potential financial success sway his decision.

It's crucial to remember that Notch sold Minecraft's IP and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in 2014. This means he can't directly utilize the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. However, he assures fans that any Minecraft spiritual successor would avoid infringing on Mojang's and Microsoft's work, showing respect for their continued development and success.

While awaiting Notch's potential "sequel," fans can look forward to Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as the upcoming live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
