For Kids aged 5-7. Drag colorful blocks to create programs and make characters move!

ScratchJr is an introductory programming language designed for young children (ages 5 and up) to create their own interactive stories and games. With simple drag-and-drop controls, kids snap together colorful programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. Using the built-in paint editor, they can customize characters, add their own voices and sounds, and even insert photos of themselves—bringing their creations to life through code.

Inspired by the popular Scratch programming language (http://scratch.mit.edu), used by millions of children ages 8 and up worldwide, ScratchJr was thoughtfully redesigned with a simplified interface and developmentally appropriate tools tailored for younger learners. Every feature supports the cognitive, social, emotional, and personal growth of early childhood.

We believe coding is a new form of literacy. Just as writing helps organize thoughts and express ideas, coding empowers children to think creatively and communicate meaningfully. Once seen as too complex for most, programming is now accessible to all—especially with tools like ScratchJr.

As children code with ScratchJr, they don’t just interact with technology—they create with it. In the process, they build critical problem-solving and project design skills, develop foundational sequencing abilities, and strengthen early math and language concepts in engaging, purposeful ways. With ScratchJr, kids aren't just learning to code—they are coding to learn.

ScratchJr is a collaborative project by the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. The Android version was implemented by Two Sigma. The app’s graphics and illustrations were created by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
