Since the November 2024 launch of the PS5 Pro, a significant shortage of standalone PS5 disc drives persists, frustrating gamers. The PS5 Pro's omission of a built-in disc drive necessitates the purchase of this accessory, creating high demand.

Both the US and UK PlayStation Direct websites consistently show the disc drive as out of stock, with limited availability at third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target resulting in immediate sellouts. This mirrors the initial PS5 console launch challenges in 2020, with scalpers exacerbating the problem by acquiring and reselling drives at inflated prices. The added cost of the drive significantly increases the overall expense of the already-expensive PS5 Pro.

Sony's silence on the matter is notable, contrasting with their efforts to maintain PS5 production during previous supply chain disruptions. The lack of a built-in drive in the PS5 Pro remains a point of contention, especially given the substantial price increase incurred by purchasing the separate drive, further amplified by scalping activities.

The current outlook remains bleak for those seeking a PS5 disc drive. Until supply increases and demand subsides, many PlayStation fans face a prolonged wait.
