This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, building a library so rich it continues to see re-releases. While these titles challenged Nintendo years ago, everyone now benefits from their availability. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated 2.5D platformer, features a floppy-eared cat-creature navigating the dream world to thwart a threat. It boasts vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both are essential.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A landmark JRPG, Final Fantasy VII propelled the genre into the Western consciousness. Square Enix's masterpiece propelled the PlayStation to dominance. While a remake exists, the original retains its charm, despite its dated polygons. Its enduring appeal remains evident.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a thrilling, GI Joe-esque adventure. Its fun gameplay is undeniable, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter into 3D. Its polygonal visuals may show their age, but the vibrant colors, unique enemy capture system, and inventive bosses create a compelling experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While Chrono Cross faced the monumental task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own merits. It's a clever, visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast of characters and an unforgettable soundtrack.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
Among the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X4 stands out for its cohesive design. While subsequent entries faltered, X4 offers a well-crafted experience. The Legacy Collections allow players to judge for themselves.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Tomba! blends platforming and adventure elements effectively. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it's deceptively challenging, offering a rewarding experience.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Though originally on SEGA Saturn, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure and a refined combat system.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is arguably the best, focusing on tomb raiding over action. This collection allows players to experience the first three games.
moon ($18.99)
moon, a Japanese-exclusive title, deconstructs the RPG genre. It's more of an adventure game with a unique, almost "punk," atmosphere. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and message are compelling.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments! Thanks for reading!
