Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but we made some great memories. I'm feeling a bit wiser, and grateful for the journey with you all. Let's dive into today's gaming news: a mountain of reviews, some fresh releases, and a few sales!
Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at classic games. Trials of Mana, Live A Live, the original Fire Emblem, and now, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection—finally bringing Miles Edgeworth's adventures to English speakers. The sequel builds masterfully on the first game's plot, enhancing the original in retrospect.
These games offer a fresh perspective, showing the prosecution's side. While mechanics remain largely familiar (finding clues, questioning witnesses), the presentation and Edgeworth's character add a unique flair. The pacing can feel uneven at times, but fans of the main series will appreciate this spin-off. If the first game feels slow, persevere—the second is significantly better.
Bonus features are generous, including a gallery, a story mode, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialog history is also included.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling contrast between its two games, creating a fantastic overall experience. The localization of the second game is a major win, and the extra features make it a complete package. With this release, every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you own the other titles, this is a must-have.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected, but welcome! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is available for those who prefer a less punishing experience.
Yumetaro's star attack returns, serving as a weapon and puzzle-solving tool. Collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for tackling tougher challenges. The game is challenging, but generous checkpoints prevent frustration from overwhelming the fun. The charming visuals and music help maintain a positive atmosphere, despite the difficulty.
While not excessively long, Gimmick! 2 remains a demanding experience. It cleverly builds upon the original without sacrificing its unique identity. Fans of the original will love it, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, casual players should be warned—this game is tough!
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. Surprisingly, it works well, although the Switch's hardware struggles at times. Despite performance limitations, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals are still enjoyable.
The weapon system adds depth, requiring players to manage gun energy, melee attacks, and a rotating third weapon. The dash maneuver is crucial for both offense and defense. Mastering the rhythm of weapon usage is key to success.
While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's atmosphere. It's a stylish heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. While other platforms offer better performance, the Switch version is still playable and enjoyable.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
Licensed games are often fan-service driven. Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash delivers plenty for fans, with strong writing and meta-systems. However, non-fans might find limited appeal. The mini-games are repetitive, and the story will resonate only with those familiar with the source material.
Even for fans, the game's focus might feel misplaced. The visuals and audio are well-executed, and unlockables might keep dedicated fans engaged. But the overall experience lacks staying power, especially for those unfamiliar with Umamusume.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit titles. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games feature save states, rewind, display options, and a gallery. The full localization is a noteworthy achievement.
The games themselves are a mixed bag. 53 Stations is frustrating, but charming. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious, though uneven. None are top-tier NES games, but they're not bad either.
Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of each game and the long-awaited English localization make it a worthwhile purchase.
