Alan Cumming compares reprising his role as Nightcrawler in Marvel's upcoming Avengers: Doomsday to the distressing experience filming 2003's X2, which he now openly describes as profoundly unpleasant.
Among the returning X-Men cast—including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Ian McKellen as Magneto—Cumming stands out as the only actor reappearing after a two-decade hiatus since his last portrayal.
In his 2021 memoir Baggage: Tales from a Fully Packed Life, Cumming detailed the chaotic production of X2 under discredited director Bryan Singer, citing substance abuse and erratic behavior that sparked cast-wide frustration. This contrasted sharply with his positive experience filming Avengers: Doomsday, which he calls "healing" in a new interview with People.
"Returning to this character after such a negative experience felt unexpectedly rewarding," Cumming reflected. "At 60, performing superhero stunts wasn't something I anticipated—yet the process proved both physically manageable and creatively fulfilling."
While Cumming has completed filming, production continues with anticipated appearances from Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds and Doctor Strange alum Xochitl Gomez rumored to join the multiverse-spanning project.
