Hulu may be bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer back from the dead. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy, albeit as a recurring character. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center on a new Slayer and may include Gellar's return. The original series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces, aided by her friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired for seven seasons (1997-2003), spawning Angel and continuing its story through comic books.
