Buy Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2 Launch

Nintendo unveiled all the exciting details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and since then, we've eagerly awaited the launch of preorders in the U.S. The price of the new console didn't shock us, but the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch certainly did. A standout is Mario Kart World, set to retail for $80 at launch. Alongside this, Nintendo is rolling out a new line of Switch 2 accessories, which have seen similar price hikes compared to their original Switch counterparts, and they've become even pricier since the initial announcement.

The only Switch 2 accessory that caught my attention was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a hefty $85. As someone who already owns multiple Switch Pro controllers, the thought of purchasing a new version isn't appealing. Thankfully, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will indeed be compatible with the Switch 2.

While many may opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not a necessity for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can save $80 by sticking with it and spending that money on new games instead. If you're in the market for a Pro controller and planning to buy the Switch 2, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option at $69.99.

It's worth noting that these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the shelves to make way for the newer model. Amazon is currently experiencing a significant stock shortage, offering only third-party alternatives. In addition to compatibility with the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has also confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will work with the Switch 2. However, we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller over Joy-Con for most games due to its superior comfort and functionality.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

If the Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're keen on getting, you'll need to wait until the console's launch. The new controller will be available starting June 5, alongside the Switch 2. You can begin preordering the new console from April 24, which is likely when the official accessories, including the Switch 2 Pro controller, will also be available for preorder. However, keep in mind that the Switch 2 Pro controller is only compatible with the Switch 2 and won't work with the original Switch.

Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller have already appeared at Walmart and Best Buy, though without a preorder date. Walmart also features listings for the Switch 2 games you'll soon be able to preorder.
