Chris Evans, renowned for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly debunked rumors of his return in the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other MCU project. Speaking to Esquire, Evans directly contradicted a report from Deadline that suggested he would reprise his role alongside Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man and is confirmed to return. Evans stated, "That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."
The speculation about Evans' return was fueled by comments from Anthony Mackie, who succeeded Evans as Captain America. Mackie, speaking to Esquire, mentioned that he had not seen a script for "Avengers: Doomsday" but was informed by his manager that Evans might return. However, Mackie clarified that when he directly asked Evans about it, Evans confirmed he was "happily retired" and not considering a comeback.
While Evans has not returned to his role as Captain America, he did make a cameo as Johnny Storm, his character from the old Fox franchise, in "Deadpool & Wolverine." This appearance was more of a comedic role, distinct from his significant involvement in the MCU as Captain America.
The MCU is currently navigating some uncertainty following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who portrayed Kang the Conqueror, after his conviction for assault and harassment. Majors was set to become the MCU's next major antagonist, akin to Thanos, but his departure has caused a significant shift in Marvel's plans. In response, Marvel has announced that Doctor Doom, to be played by Robert Downey Jr., will be the new central villain. This change has sparked further speculation about the return of other original Avengers, though no official confirmations have been made beyond Downey Jr.'s involvement.
In other MCU news, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, will not appear in "Avengers: Doomsday" but is slated for a "central role" in its sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The Russo Brothers, who previously directed several Avengers films, are set to helm "Avengers: Secret Wars," which will continue exploring the multiverse narrative with Hayley Atwell reprising her role as Agent Carter.
