Civilization VII: Top PC Game of 2025 and New Campaign Mechanics
Civilization VII has been crowned the most anticipated PC game of 2025 by PC Gamer's "Most Wanted" event. This accolade follows the reveal of innovative gameplay mechanics designed to enhance campaign engagement. Let's delve into the details.
PC Gamer's "Most Wanted" Event
On December 6th, PC Gamer's PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted showcased the top 25 upcoming games for 2025, as determined by a vote from The Council, a panel of over 70 developers, creators, and editors. Civ VII secured the coveted top spot. The nearly three-hour livestream also featured trailers and updates for other highly anticipated titles.
Doom: The Dark Ages and Monster Hunter Wilds followed in second and third place, respectively. Other notable games included on the list were Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, The Thing: Remastered, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.
Civilization VII launches simultaneously on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on February 11, 2025.
The "Ages" Mechanic: Completing the Campaign
Addressing player feedback regarding incomplete campaigns in Civ VI, Creative Director Ed Beach introduced the "Ages" mechanic. This system divides a single playthrough into three distinct eras: Antiquity Age, Exploration Age, and Modern Age. Upon the conclusion of each Age, players can transition to a historically or geographically linked civilization.
This transition isn't random; connections are historically relevant. For instance, the Roman Empire might transition to the French Empire, perhaps with the Norman Empire serving as a bridge. The player's leader remains consistent across Ages. The "overbuild" feature allows constructing new buildings atop existing ones, although Wonders and certain structures persist.
This innovative mechanic offers a dynamic campaign experience, allowing players to navigate diverse civilizations within a single playthrough, managing cultural, military, diplomatic, and economic facets while maintaining a connection to their chosen leader.
