Monster Hunter Wilds Protag Isn't Trying to Just Hunt Monsters to Extinction, Even If You Are

While the Monster Hunter series is famous for its epic hunts of giant creatures, Capcom aims to highlight a core theme in the game: the deep connection between hunters and the natural world. Read on to learn more about what to expect in Monster Hunter Wilds!

Monster Hunter Wilds Explores the Human-Nature Relationship

Redefining the Hunter's Role

The Monster Hunter universe stresses that great hunters maintain a balance—where humans and monsters coexist in a symbiotic relationship. Capcom's development team is amplifying this theme, while also giving your hunter more personality.

Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds) places strong emphasis on how nature and human life intertwine within its world. According to game director Yuya Tokuda in a PC Gamer interview, "We wanted to explore the relationships between people, nature, and monsters—defining the hunter's place in such a world. This idea is expressed not only through gameplay but through a rich narrative. We have more content planned that aligns with this vision, and we're confident the game conveys what we aimed to express."

To achieve this, Wilds introduces more dialogue options, allowing players to shape their hunter's personality. Tokuda explained that the world is inhabited by people from many backgrounds, each with unique views on handling monster encounters. Citing characters like Nata and Olivia, he noted how differing perspectives influence their approaches: "They come from different worlds, so naturally they’d tackle problems in their own ways. People with varied viewpoints live side by side, and we wanted to show how hunters perceive this world—what they feel, how they think. Since everyone is different, we’ve added these emotional and narrative layers to Monster Hunter Wilds."

This evolution marks a departure for the series, which previously relied on silent protagonists and limited dialogue. Still, players who prefer action over conversation can dive straight into hunts without sacrificing combat depth.

Tokuda reassured hunters: "If you'd rather skip the story and jump into your next hunt, that's completely possible. The amount of text won't affect how many monsters are available, so all types of players can enjoy the experience." The director also hinted that more content is on the way—deepening the theme of humanity’s bond with nature. This is only the beginning.
