The acclaimed series Shōgun, recipient of 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is officially returning for a second season—with production plans now in motion. FX confirmed in a press release that Cosmo Jarvis, known for his role as the shipwrecked pilot John Blackthorne, will reprise his performance while also stepping into a co-executive producer role.
Additionally, Hiroyuki Sanada—who previously committed to Season 2 after FX renewed the initially limited series—has been elevated to executive producer following his work on the first installment. Filming is scheduled to commence in January 2026 in Vancouver, the original shoot location.
FX describes Season 2 as “an entirely new chapter” expanding beyond James Clavell’s novel adaptation seen in Season 1. The network detailed how both seasons intertwine:
“Season 1 followed Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s (Sanada) struggle against the united Council of Regents. The discovery of John Blackthorne’s (Jarvis) European ship and its strategic intelligence became pivotal in Toranaga’s victory during Japan’s era-defining civil war.
Set a decade later, Season 2 continues this historically-inspired saga of two men from opposing worlds, bound by destiny.”
With production confirmed, fans can hope for new episodes by late 2026—though anticipation will have to suffice for now.
