Rescuing Sam During “Reckoning”

As you approach the climax of the main quest line, you'll discover that Sam is imprisoned at Praguer’s Camp, captured by Brabant. Your opportunity to rescue him arises during the "Reckoning" quest. Stealth or violence are your entry methods into the camp. To move freely without arousing suspicion, you'll need a guard's outfit. You can obtain this by either killing a guard and concealing his body or by searching the camp's chests. Once equipped, you can explore the camp in search of Sam.

When to Rescue Sam

After freeing Sam, it's not yet time to escape with him. He informs you about von Aulitz, another captive in the camp.
