Don't Starve Together's Mobile Debut: No Netflix, But Coming to iOS and Android
Following a period of silence since the June 2024 announcement of Don't Starve Together's Netflix Games arrival, we have an update. The game will not be coming to Netflix Games, but will instead launch on iOS and Android mobile devices.
Developed by Klei Entertainment and published by Playdigious, Don't Starve Together retains its unique Tim Burton-esque aesthetic, challenging players to survive a hostile island environment as quirky characters. The core gameplay remains: gather resources and, most importantly, don't starve.
Initially planned as a Netflix Games exclusive, Don't Starve Together will now see a global release on the iOS App Store and Google Play. While a specific release date is yet to be announced, both Klei and Playdigious confirm it's forthcoming.
Netflix's Shifting Focus?
The cancellation of Don't Starve Together's Netflix exclusivity raises questions about the platform's future commitment to indie titles. The loss of this significant indie title, following others like Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon, suggests a potential shift in strategy. This is concerning, as Netflix's indie game selection has been a considerable draw for many subscribers.
My previous analysis of Squid Game: Unleashed highlighted a trend towards Netflix prioritizing its own IP. This increased focus on internally developed games may negatively impact the platform's previously strong indie game catalog.
