Midnight Society, the game development studio co-founded by popular streamer Guy 'Dr. Disrespect' Beahm, has announced its closure after three years of operation. The studio, which also included industry veterans like Robert Bowling and Quinn Delhyo from games such as Call of Duty and Halo, revealed the news via a post on X. They stated, "Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers." Alongside this announcement, the studio reached out to other companies, asking if they were hiring and could offer employment opportunities to their team members.
The studio's first and only project, Deadrop, was an ambitious free-to-play FPS game that aimed to leverage the team's extensive experience. Initially slated for a 2024 release, Deadrop unfortunately missed its target date. The game was set in a unique fictional universe where "the 80s never ended," featuring characters in Daft Punk-inspired helmets and armed with both guns and swords. The gameplay was intended to be a PvPvE style extraction shooter, promising a thrilling experience for players.
In 2024, Midnight Society parted ways with Beahm following his admission of exchanging messages with a minor through Twitch's Whispers feature, which he acknowledged as sometimes being inappropriate. Despite this split, the studio continued working on Deadrop until the decision to shut down was made this year.
The closure of Midnight Society adds to the growing list of studios affected by the challenging conditions in the gaming industry, joining the ranks of Ubisoft, BioWare, Phoenix Labs, and others that have faced similar closures or layoffs.
