Fallout developers, including New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, express keen interest in a new Fallout installment, but creative freedom is paramount.
Creative Constraints: The Key Factor
A YouTube Q&A reveals Sawyer's willingness to helm another Fallout title, but only under specific conditions. He emphasizes the importance of creative leeway: "Any project hinges on 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?'" Restrictive constraints, he explains, diminish the appeal, as the core desire to explore new avenues would be stifled.
This sentiment is echoed by other Fallout developers. Last year, co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky voiced their enthusiasm for a Fallout: New Vegas remaster. In a Gamer interview, Cain highlighted the necessity of novelty: "Every RPG I've ever made offered something new...If someone said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?'" He underscores the importance of innovative elements to spark his interest.
Obsidian's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, also shares this desire, stating in a Game Pressure interview (January 2023) that while not currently in development, he'd welcome the opportunity. However, Obsidian's current commitments to Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2 leave little room for immediate Fallout projects. He expresses hope for a future Fallout collaboration before retirement, but acknowledges the uncertainty of timing.
