Final Fantasy 9 Celebrates 25th Anniversary This Year
25th Anniversary Website Goes Live
Square Enix has launched a dedicated website celebrating Final Fantasy 9's 25th anniversary. The site reveals plans for commemorative products and collaborations saying they're "preparing various anniversary projects including merchandise and partnerships."
The anniversary collection features character figurines, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and art books. The website notes additional announcements will follow throughout the anniversary period.
Originally released on July 7, 2000 for PlayStation, Final Fantasy 9 has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game received multiple re-releases including a 2012 Japanese collector's edition, a 2016 mobile remaster, and modern console ports between 2017-2019.
Potential FF9 Remake and Stalled Anime Project
The anniversary site has reignited rumors about a possible FF9 remake. Following the success of Final Fantasy VII's remake series, many fans speculate FF9 could receive similar treatment. A 2019 NHK poll ranked FF9 as Japan's fourth favorite Final Fantasy title. While the website doesn't confirm a remake, the game's enduring popularity makes it a prime candidate.
Another missing project is the FF9 anime adaptation first announced in 2021. Titled "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," the series would have explored the adventures of Vivi's descendants ten years after the original story. Production partner Cyber Group Studios, which secured distribution rights, filed for bankruptcy in late 2024. Despite the setback, potential buyers including United Smile and Newen Studios have shown interest in reviving the animated project.
